Travel Wishlist

Como li há dias, eu realmente tenho o "travel bug". Viajar é a melhor forma de aprendermos sobre o mundo e a toda a sua cultura. Uma coisa é ver na televisão, ver fotografias ou ler sobre esse destino. Outra coisa é ir pessoalmente a esse local. Tudo é diferente quando lá estamos, pois além da nossa experiência, podemos cheirar e provar os pratos típicos, falar com os locais e assim escrever mais um capítulo na nossa vida. 
Tenho uma lista enorme de lugares que quero visitar e é com muito agrado que algumas já estão exploradas. Este blogue é também uma forma de poder partilhar as minhas experiências de viagens e espero num futuro próximo escrever sobre um destino novo.
Fica aqui alguns dos meus destinos de sonho! Quais são os vossos? 


As I read a few days ago, I have the "travel bug". Travelling is the best way to learn about the world and all its culture. One thing is to see on TV, view photos or read about this destination. Another thing is to actually go to that place. Everything is different when you're there because aside from our experience, we can smell and taste the regional dishes, talk with locals and see the real colors of the buildings and landscapes. Then we can just write another chapter in our life.
I have a big list of places I want to visit and it is with great pleasure that some are already visited. Cuddle|Days is also a way to share my travel experiences and hopefully in the near future I'll write about a new destination.
Here is some of my dream destinations! What are yours?

Netherlands: Leiden

Leiden foi a primeira cidade que conhecemos na Holanda. Encantadora e elegante, fica situada a 40km de Amsterdão. Apesar de pequena, Leiden tem ao dispor os serviços de uma grande cidade, o que é muito positivo pois o seu ar acolhedor e amigável agrada logo à primeira vista. Com a Universidade de Leiden, a cidade acolhe 17 mil alunos o que faz com que seja também considerada como uma cidade universitária. Com prédios do séc. XVII, canais com barcos e cafés amoráveis, Leiden é um excelente ponto de passagem. Depois de conhecer a cidade, aproveite para provar as que são consideradas como as melhores panquecas holandesas.

Leiden was the first city we explored in Netherlands. Charming and elegant, it's located 40km from Amsterdam. Although it's small, Leiden has all the services of a big city, which is very positive because you feel right away the cozy and friendly ambience. With the University of Leiden, the city welcomes 17,000 students, which we also can see it as a university town. With buildings of the XVII century, lovely canals with boats and beautiful cafes, Leiden is an excellent city to stop by. After seeing the city, take the opportunity to taste the best Dutch pancakes. At least they defend them like that.

Welcome to Madeira!

Eu ia começar a escrever sobre Holanda mas antes disso há um lugar obrigatório de que ainda não vos falei. A ilha da Madeira (Portugal) é um paraíso no Atlântico. Com as suas paisagens encantadoras, gastronomia deliciosa e com uma cultura inconfundível, Madeira é um destino que tem de ser visitado! A vantagem de viajar é, em outras, dar valor ao que temos e é sempre bom voltar para um lugar que nos faz tão feliz. Vejam o próximo vídeo onde um turista francês captou excelentemente a ilha. Espero que assim conheçam um pouco mais da ilha. Brevemente irei vos falar mais desta Região.

I was going to start writing about Holland but not before mentioning the most important place: Madeira. Madeira (Portugal) is a paradise in the Atlantic. With its beautiful landscapes, delicious cuisine and unique culture, Madeira is a destination that must be visited! The advantage of traveling is also to value what we already have. It's always nice to return to a place that makes us so happy. Watch the next video that a french turist did and it's amazing. Hopefully you will get to learn a little bit more about the island. Soon, I'll write more about it.

From Italy with Love: Verona

Uma romântica como eu não conseguia ir a Itália e estar a duas horas de Verona e não ir. 
De comboio, em menos de duas horas, chegamos a Verona onde passamos uma tarde muito agradável na cidade de Romeu e Julieta. 
Património Mundial da Unesco, a cidade dos namorados é lindíssima. Não deixem de visitar o Anfiteatro romano, a Catedral Gótica (séc X), a Igreja românica de São Zeno, os palácios, como o Palazzo del Consiglio, o Castel Vecchio, a ponte Scaligero (1354) e, claro, a Casa da Julieta. 


Being a true romantic girl, I could not go to Italy and be two hours from Verona and not visiting it.
In less than two hours, by train, we arrived at Verona where we spent a very pleasant afternoon in the city of Romeo and Juliet.
UNESCO World Heritage Site, the city of lovers is so beautiful! While there you should visit the Roman amphitheater, the Gothic Cathedral (X century), the Romanesque church of St. Zeno, the palaces, such as Palazzo del Consiglio, the Castel Vecchio, the bridge Scaligero (1354) and, of course, the House of Juliet.

From Czech Republic with Love: Prague (II)

E eis que chegou aos últimos dois dias da viagem. No penúltimo dia voltamos a escolher a companhia dos Discover Walks e à tarde fizemos a Castel Tour. O mais "engraçado" é que para ir ter ao ponto de encontro era recomendado ir de electrico mas apanhamos o nº certo mas na direcção errada. Foi engraçado porque vimos uma grande parte da cidade sentadas (o que é fantástico após tantos dias a andar) e fomos locais por uns minutos. Mas depois lá saímos numa paragem e voltamos a entrar no certo. 

Finally, the last two days of the trip. On our third day in Prague we choose the Discover Walks to be our guides in the afternoon. They introduced us the Castel Tour. The funniest part of that day was that to go to the meeting point was recommended us to go by tram. Well we did, but in the wrong direction. It was funny because we saw a great part of the city while we were in the tram (which was great after so many days walking) and got to be local for a few minutes. But we changed to another tram and we got there in time. 

A tarde foi passada a conhecer o complexo do castelo (um dos maiores do mundo), o red light row, o Václav Havel, Panelák e a história sobre o final do nazismo e do comunismo. Fomos ainda até à Prague's Own Tower e passeamos no grande parque que lá tem.  


The afternoon was spent exploring the castle complex (one of the largest in the world), the red light row, the Václav Havel, panelak and the story about the end of Nazism and Communism.We went also to Prague's Own Tower and walked in the park there. It was great.

No dia seguinte foi muito mais calmo. As poucas horas que restavam em Praga foi para estarmos sentadas na praça a tirar ideias de moda dos turistas e locais. Lovely. 

The next day was so much relaxed. The few hours left in Prague were spent in the main square. It was a great way to get fashion ideas from tourists and locals. Lovely.

Após 14 dias a viajar posso dizer que foi umas das experiências mais divertidas e enriquecidoras que já tive. Só ficou Karlovy Vary para conhecer. Para uma próxima. 
Praga, tenho de voltar um dia. Ficou muito por ser visto e explorado. 


After 14 days of traveling I can say that it was one of the most fun experiences I've ever had. Shame that it was the fillm festival in Karlovy Vary at the time and the hotels were all booked. Next time, I hope.  
Prague, I have to go back there one day.

From Czech Republic with Love: Prague (I)

Deixámos a capital para o fim e três dias para a conhecer. Obviamente que não foi o suficiente para conhecer totalmente a cidade mas o ideal para se apaixonar. Depois de entregar o carro na rent car perto da estação central a nossa aventura começou pelas ruas de Praga. Começamos por conhecer a famosa Wenceslas Square e em poucos minutos chegamos à praça central. Simplesmente encantadora com toda a sua iluminação e com o bohemia jazz festival a decorrer. 

Prague was our last stop. In three days we explored this amazing city. I know that it's impossible to see everything in this short amount of time but trust me, it's enough to fall in love with it. After delivering the car near the central station we began our adventure on the streets of Prague. We first saw the famous Wenceslas Square and within minutes we reached the central square. It was so lovely with all the buildings lightings and even more special because of the bohemian jazz festival that was happening live. 

Nos dois dias seguintes fomos explorar a "cidade das cem cúpulas". Voltamos a escolher a ideia do Free Walk Tour e escolhemos o grupo Discover Walks Prague. De manhã fizemos a tour: The old town - trendy Prague tour. Durante uma hora descobrimos a Charles University, as ruas Flamboyant Pařížská Street e Staromák;  Josefov – the Jewish ghost town, o Astronomical Clock e toda a sua história incluindo os 12 apostolos; o famoso Grand Café Orient; o Powder Gate e Ungelt. 

Over the next two days we explored the "City of one hundred domes". Since we enjoyed so much the Free Walk Tour we did the Discover Walks Prague. First we did the old town - Prague tour trendy. For an hour we saw the Charles University; the Flamboyant Pařížská Street and Staromák; the Josefov - the Jewish ghost town; the Astronomical Clock and its history including the 12 Apostles; the famous Grand Café Orient; the Powder Gate and Ungelt. 

À tarde tivemos outro guia que nos acompanhou na Magical Prague - Charles Bridge and Kampa Tour. Com chuva à mistura foi uma das visitas mais engraçadas da viagem. Primeira vez que andamos na histórica ponte foi a correr enquanto a nossa divertida guia explicava o que mal viamos. Mas afinal esta tour era mágica pois mal chegamos à ilha o sol apareceu. Assim continuamos a conhecer o jardim, onde o Missão Impossível foi filmado, as esculturas dos bebés; o Kajka; ouvimos histórias sobre o comunismo e o pós; vimos o Devil River; e finalmente o John Lennon Wall. Antes de irmos jantar conseguimos encontrar a passagem mais pequena que existe onde até há um semáforo para passarmos. Único. 

In the afternoon we had another "native" who guided us in the Magical Prague - Charles Bridge and Kampa Tour. With rain in the mix, it was one of the funniest tours of our trip. The first time we walked in Charles bridge was so fun because we were running while our guide was explaining it. But this tour is indeed magical - we arrived in Kampa island and the sun appeared. So we kept exploring island, where the Mission Impossible was filmed; the sculptures of tv babies; the Kajka; we heard stories about communism and post communism; we went to the Devil River, and finally we visited the John Lennon Wall. Before dinner, we Spotted a narrow alley with a traffic light that you must respect! Unique.

Os primeiros dois dias foram memoráveis e com tantos promenores que é complicado cá escrever tudo. No próximo post vou escrever sobre os nossos últimos momentos na capital checa. 

The first two days were memorable and with so many details it's complicated to write down everything here. In the next post I'll write about our last moments in the Czech capital.

From Czech Republic with Love: Kutná Hora and Karlštejn

De volta à República Checa fomos para uma das referências turísticas deste país: Kutná Hora. Durante a viagem de carro passamos por este lindo campo de girassóis. Pena a fotografia não fazer justiça à beleza das flores. 

No final do dia chegamos a Kutná Hora que com os lucros das Minas de Prata na época medieval, esta cidade já foi a mais rica do país. Património da Unesco desde 1995, a cidade fica a 60km a leste de Praga e é famosa pelos seus monumentos: Cathedral of Our Lady (Chrám Nanebevzetí Pany Marie); St. Barbara's Church (Kostel Svaté Barbory); Sedlec Ossuary; Church of St. James (Kostel sv. Jakuba); Church of St. John Nepomuk (Kostel sv. Jana Nepomuckého); Jesuit College (Jezuitská kolej). 

After leaving Poland we went back to Czech Republic.  After a few hours driving we saw this beautiful field full of sunflowers. Shame that the photo does not do justice to the the amazing landscape.

At the end of the day we arrived in Kutná Hora. With the profits of their Silver Mine in the medieval times, Kutná Hora was once the country's richest city. Heritage of UNESCO since 1995, the city is 60km east of Prague and is famous for its monuments: Cathedral of Our Lady (Chrám Nanebevzetí Pany Marie); St. Barbara's Church (Kostel Svaté Barbory); Sedlec Ossuary; Church of St. James (Kostel sv. Jakuba); Church of St. John Nepomuk (Kostel sv. Jana Nepomuckého); Jesuit College (Jezuitská kolej). 

Depois de conhecer a Catedral e ver a "alternativa" Capela de Ossos, saímos de Kutná Hora e fomos visitar outro marco histório da República Checa, o Castelo Karlstejn. A 40km de Praga, o Castelo é incrível. Fica colocado sobre a colina o que lhe dá uma característica de Histórias de Encantar. Construído pelo rei Carlos IV entre 1348 e 1368, o castelo vale a pena ser visitado. Há visitas guiadas entre as 9h e as 18h30. 

After visiting the Cathedral and the "alternative" Chapel of Bones, we left Kutná Hora behind and went to visit another historic monument of this country: Karlstejn Castle. 40km of Prague, this Castle is amazing. It is placed on the hill which made me remember of a Fairytale Castle. It was built by King Charles IV, between 1348 and 1368. It is worth visiting and it's open between 9am to 6pm.

From Poland With Love: Wroclaw

Depois de sair de Kraków fizemos uma viagem de quase 3horas para chegar a Wroclaw. As condições das auto-estradas são melhores do que a da República Checa e penso que a razão é simples. Na Polónia há portagens e no país vizinho não. 

After leaving Kraków, we drove almost 3 hours to get to Wroclaw. The conditions of the highways are better than the Czech Republic's and I think the reason is simple; In Poland they have tolls and the other doesn't.

Wroclaw é a quarta maior cidade da Polónia e é banhada pelo rio Oder. Com as suas ilhas e pontes, é considerada por muitos como a "Veneza Polaca". Como gostamos da experiencia da Free Walking Tour em Kraków, voltamos a escolher esta tour em Wroclaw. Em duas horas conhecemos a Old Town, o Market Square, a torre gótica, o quateirão judeu, o edfiício principal da universidade com os traçõs barrocos, o strow Tumski (Cathedral Island), entre outros edifícios e parques importantes da cidade. 

Wroclaw is the fourth largest city in Poland and is situated on the River Oder. With its islands and bridges, it's considered by many as the "Polish Venice". Since we enjoyed the Free Walking Tour experience in Kraków, we decided to do it again in Wroclaw. In two hours we explored the Old Town, the Market Square - Rynek, the Gothic tower, the University's main building, the Cathedral Island and the Cathedral; among other buildings and parks of the city.

E quando lá forem podem fazer uma tour com um propósito, encontrar todos os gnomos anti-comunistas que foram começados a serem pintados nos anos 80 por um grupo de estudantes: Laranjas Alternativa. Com o objectivo de representar o máximo de profissões e estados das pessoas, as pessoas começaram a construir cada vez mais. Existe até mapas para mostrar os mais de 200 gnomos que estão no cen­tro his­tó­rico da capi­tal da Baixa Silé­sia.

Another tip I can give is that when you go there, u can be touring with a special purpose: find all the anti-communists gnomes in the historic center. They started to being painted in the '80s by a group of students: The Orange Alternative. In order to represent as many professions and states of people, artists began to build more and more. There are even special maps to indicate you the over 200 gnomes that are in here, in the capital of Lower Silesian Voivodeship.

No dia seguinte despedimo-nos da Polónia e voltamos para a República Checa. Cerca de 4h depois chegamos a Kutná Hora, mas antes de atravessarmos a fronteira paramos pela segunda vez num Shopping onde tivemos uma das melhores refeições da viagem. 

The next day we said "goodbye" to Poland and "hello again" to Czech Republic.  Four hours later we arrived at Kutná Hora, but before crossing the border we stopped for the second time in a Mall where we had one of the best meals of the trip.

From Poland with Love: Oświęcim

Saímos de Ostrava (República Checa) por volta das 9h e no hotel já havia hóspedes a beber cerveja: isto é que eu chamo começar bem o dia. Depois de uma viagem de quase duas horas, paramos em Oświęcim (Polónia) para visitar os dois campos de concentração: Auschwitz (I) e Auschwitz- Birkenau (II). 

We left Ostrava (Czech Republic) around 9am and at the hotel there were guests drinking beer already: this is great way to start the day. Driving for almost two hours, we stopped in  Oświęcim (Poland) to visit two concentration camps: Auschwitz (I) and Auschwitz-Birkenau (II).

Sem dúvida que é um lugar que tem de ser visitado eventualmente. Todos nós estudamos na escola e ainda para mais vimos os filmes da Segunda Guerra Mundial. Quem não se lembra de A vida é Bela (1997) quando era criança? Talvez daí só nos lembramos mais do "Buongiorno, Principessa!" e do tanque final, o prémio por ter vencido o "jogo". A verdade é que tudo aconteceu e os campos servem para nos despertar para o quão horrível o ser humano pode ser. É impressionante a visita aos campos, onde podemos ver as condições desumanas em que viviam e eram tratadas pelos nazis. Existe ainda exposições com pertences das pessoas, como as malas que deixavam quando chegavam aos campos e os  seus óculos e sapatos. Pessoalmente tudo é chocante e emocionante, mas a secção das crianças é a mais impressionante. Estima-se que quase 1 milhão e meio de pessoas morreram nestes campos. 

Without a doubt, Auschwitz is a place that must be visited eventually. We all studied them in school and we have seen many movies about World War II. Who does not remember La vita è bella (1997)? Perhaps we just remember the "Buongiorno, Principessa!" and the tank in the end, the prize for winning the "game". The truth is that it happened and these concentration camps serve to awaken us to how horrible humans can be. It is unforgettable to visit it, where we can see the inhumane conditions in which they lived and were treated by the Nazis. There is also exhibitions with belongings of the people as their bags, which they left when they came here, their glasses and shoes. Personally it is all shocking, but the children part is the most revolting one. It's estimated that almost one million and half people died in these camps.

Semanas antes da viagem tinha revisto o filme A lista de Schindler (1993) de Steven Spielberg, que também decorre neste campo. Enquanto o nosso guia introduzia pausadamente a visita que iamos começar a fazer, olhava para a famosa frase "Arbeit macht frei" e pensei: não foi um filme, foi mesmo uma realidade de terror. Que nunca seja esquecido. 

Weeks before the trip I watched Schindler's List (1993), directed by Steven Spielberg. It takes place in these camps. While our guide was introducing the visit that we was about to start, I stared at the famous "Arbeit macht frei" and I thought: it was not a movie, it was a reality of terror. That may never be forgotten.

From Czech Republic with Love: Telč, Brno and Ostrava

Antes de chegarmos ao nosso terceiro destino, conhecemos Telč, Património da Humanidade da Unesco. Encantadora com as casas típicas checas renascentistas e barrocas do séc. XVI, coloridas em tons de pastel, é um local fantástico para conhecer durante uma tarde. 

Before we got to our third destination, we stopped in Telč, an Unesco World Heritage Site. Lovely homes with typical Czech Renaissance and Baroque style from the XVI century. Telc is a fantastic place to spend an afternoon.

Brno foi a próxima cidade, a segunda maior da República Checa. Primeiro vimos o relógio criado por Oldřich Rujbr and Petr Kameník que está na praça central, onde é impossível descobrir que horas são, a não ser que se dê uns passos para trás e olhemos em direcção à torre do relógio que vemos à nossa esquerda (segredo de um local).  Aqui podemos conhecer as muitas igrejas que tem pela cidade, as Catedrais de São Pedro, São Paulo e a de Petrov.  Outro ponto turístico é a Villa Tugendhat , considerado um dos melhores exemplos da arquitectura moderna e foi criada pelo arquitecto alemão Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. É Património da Humanidade desde 2001. Podemos ainda visitar o Castelo Špilberk e ouvir os sinos a tocar às horas certas. Merece ser ainda conhecido o Teatro Janacek, o Mahen e o Reduta, onde Mozart  tocou quando tinha 11 anos e que por isso há uma estátua dele nesta Vegetable Market (Zelny Trh)). Uma cidade que também recebe muito estudantes de Erasmus e um deles foi o meu ex-vizinho da altura da Universidade, que foi o nosso guia durante a nossa estadia em Brno: děkuji JP ;)

Brno was the next town, the second largest in the Czech Republic. We first saw the clock created by Petr Kameník and Oldřich Rujbr that is in the central square. Well, it's impossible to figure out what time it's, unless you give yourself a few steps back and look towards the clock tower that we see to our left (secret tip of a local). In Brno you can visit the many churches that they have, like the Cathedral of St. Peter, St. Paul and Petrov, although must of the czechs are atheists.  Another landmark is the Villa Tugendhat, one of the best examples of modern architecture and was created by German architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. It is a World Heritage Site since 2001. You can also visit the Špilberk Castle and hear the bells ringing at certain hours. You can also explore the Theatres of Janacek, Mahen and the Reduta, where Mozart played when he was 11 years and therefore there is a statue of him in this Vegetable Market (Zelny Trh)). A city that also gets a lot of Erasmus students and one of them was my former neighbor of my University, who was our guide during our stay in Brno:  děkuji JP;)

Castelo Špilberk

Antes de irmos para a Polónia, ficamos em Ostrava. A 15 km de Polónia, Ostrava é a terceira maior cidade da República Checa. Uma cidade industrial que oferece diversas oportunidades de visitas turísticas. Apesar de não termos tido tempo para conhecer totalmente a cidade, pois chegamos à hora do jantar e partimos logo de manhã em direcção à Polónia (Auschwitz), ficam aqui algumas sugestões para uma próxima: Museu de Landed Park Mining; Stodolni Street; The World of Miniature; Zoo Ostrav; Silesian-Ostrava Castel e o Michal Colliery.

Before leaving to Poland, we stayed in Ostrava. 15 km from Poland, Ostrava is the third largest city of the Czech Republic. An industrial city that offers many opportunities for sightseeing. Although we didn't have time to explore the entire city, as we come to dinner and left early in the morning towards Poland (Auschwitz), here are some suggestions for the next time: Landed Park Museum of Mining; Stodolni Street; The World of Miniature; Zoo Ostrav; Silesian-Ostrava Castel and Michal Colliery.

From Czech Republic with Love: Plzeň and Český Krumlov

Mais um capítulo foi escrito no meu livro de viagens. Desta vez dois países foram conhecidos e admirados: República Checa e Polónia. Hoje só vou falar da República Checa.

Depois de semanas a preparar a viagem, desde fazer os orçamentos de carro, combustível, hotéis até aos roteiros turísticos de castelos e lugares que tínhamos mesmo de visitar, finalmente chegou o dia de embarcar.

Another chapter was written in my travel book. This time two countries have been known and admired: Czech Republic and Poland. Today I will write only about Czech Republic.

After weeks preparing the trip, from budgets of the car, the fuel, and fees up to hotels, tours of castles and places that we should visit, the day of the departure finally came!

Pilsen

Jantar do primeiro dia: No to diet!

Depois de levantar o carro no aeroporto de Praha, seguimos em direção até Plzeň, a cidade onde a famosa cerveja Pilsner Urquell foi criada. Pena foi o tempo que nos recebeu, que quero acreditar que foi a maneira de nos abençoar: chuva e trovoada. De qualquer modo, ficamos numa humilde pensão datada do séc. XVII excelentemente bem situada. É uma cidade onde podemos conhecer a Catedral gótica de São Bartolomeu; a fábrica da cerveja Plzeňský Prazdroj já que a Pilsner Urquell foi aqui estabelecida em 1842; podemos ainda andar nos túneis subterrâneos onde antigamente os habitantes guardavam a sua comida e colocavam algumas matérias primas; e entrar na segunda maior sinagoga da Europa.

After picking up the car at the airport in Prague, we head to Pilsen, the city where the famous Pilsner Urquell was created. The worst part was the weather that welcomed us; but I believe it was to bless us: rain and lightnings. Anyway, we checked in at a humble pension from the XVII century. Pilsen is a city where we can visit the Gothic Cathedral of St. Bartholomew, the brewery Plzeňský Prazdroj where the beer Pilsner Urquell was established here in 1842. We can still walk in the underground tunnels where once the people kept their food and put some raw materials; and enter the second largest synagogue in Europe.

Český Krumlov

No segundo dia fomos para Český krumlov. Uma das cidades mais lindas que já vi. Património da Humanidade desde 1992, a cidade medieval da Boémia do Sul, tem um magnifico Castelo que podemos visitar e ver como é que os Reis viviam antigamente. A cidade tem um ambiente acolhedor e romântico, preparada para receber turistas durante todo o ano. Andar de barco no rio Vltava é uma das formas de conhecer Cesky krumlov. A melhor vista é quando subimos ao Castelo e vemos toda a cidade. Um vista fantástica. A voltar, sem dúvida.


On the second day we went to Český Krumlov. One of the most beautiful cities I've ever seen. World Heritage Site since 1992, the medieval town of South Bohemia, has a magnificent castle that we can visit and see how the Kings once lived. The city has a warm and romantic feeling, ready to receive tourists throughout the year. Boating on the Vltava River is one ways to know Český Krumlov. The best view we got is when we went to the top of the Castle and seen the whole city. A fantastic view. It's a place to return, no doubt about it.
