From Italy with Love: Milan

Earlier this year I lived another adventure with two more friends. After two years since Barcelona, finally we booked a date and we went to a country that has always been on my list of dream trips. We found great prices so Milan was our destiny. Initially I only associated this city with Fahion but Milan has lot to offer, besides amazing food!!

Because we live in different parts of Portugal, our favorite solution to get together is to travel. No, we are not rich. If you are aware of the sites of Low-Cost Travel airlines, you can find amazing prices! Trust me!!  This time, for less than €50 we bought our ticket. It was so cheap, at least I think so; the tickets between Madeira and the Portuguese mainland usually reaches more than 100 € (and I'm being nice about this price).

For me, the best of this trip was our reunion. We were always talking and sometimes we didn't even paid attention to the monuments. So funny! However two days were reserved to the city and we got time to explore: The Cathedral / Dumo in Milan, the church Santa Maria della Grazie and di Santa Maria Presso San Satiro; the Castello Sforzesco; the Parco Sempione; the Arco della Pace; the La Scala Opera; the Ticinese; the water-channels in Navigli; the Gallerie Vittorio Emanuele II among other landmarks. Well, we even ended up walking in China Town.

Although it's not a city that got into my top 10, Milan is a city that has its charm. Anyway, I still got to see more of Italy. In the next post I will tell you about another stop on this trip, a very romantic city, Verona.

Welcome September!

Obrigada!!

Summer is ending and there is still much to do; golds that haven't been reached yet. But I believe that everything will be accomplished and I will not give up!
Now that the holidays have finished it's time to review the summer: meetings with friends, festivals, nights out, summer outfits and the great roadtrip (that you read in recent posts) and being photographed in Prague by an intern for the Cosmopolitan of CR fb page! Unforgettable! August was fantastic and who visited the island knows that it's the month of the "arraiais" and friendship.  It was also a rewarding month because every day the blog visits were always increasing. Thank you!!

Because life needs a good soundtrack here are my songs choices for this summer:

  • Youth - Daughter
  • One Republic - Feel Again
  • Katie Herzig - Free My Mind (RAC Remix)
  • The XX - You Got The Love (Florence and the Machine)
  • WTF! - Da Bop
  • D'Banj - Oliver Twist
  • Seu Jorge - Quem não quer sou eu
  • M83 - Midnight City
  • Liquidee - Alone
  • Pitbull - Back in time
  • Wild ones - Flo Rida feat Sia
  • Calvin Harris - Feel so Close
  • Edward Sharpe - Home (RAC Remix)

How was your summer and what was the soundtrack?

Finally, the last two days of the trip. On our third day in Prague we choose the Discover Walks to be our guides in the afternoon. They introduced us the Castel Tour. The funniest part of that day was that to go to the meeting point was recommended us to go by tram. Well we did, but in the wrong direction. It was funny because we saw a great part of the city while we were in the tram (which was great after so many days walking) and got to be local for a few minutes. But we changed to another tram and we got there in time.

The afternoon was spent exploring the castle complex (one of the largest in the world), the red light row, the Václav Havel, panelak and the story about the end of Nazism and Communism. We went also to Prague's Own Tower and walked in the park there. It was great.

Lovely.

The next day was so much relaxed. The few hours left in Prague were spent in the main square. It was a great way to get fashion ideas from tourists and locals. Lovely.

After 14 days of traveling I can say that it was one of the most fun experiences I've ever had. Shame that it was the fillm festival in Karlovy Vary at the time and the hotels were all booked. Next time, I hope.
Prague, I have to go back there one day.

Prague was our last stop. In three days we explored this amazing city. I know that it's impossible to see everything in this short amount of time but trust me, it's enough to fall in love with it. After delivering the car near the central station we began our adventure on the streets of Prague. We first saw the famous Wenceslas Square and within minutes we reached the central square. It was so lovely with all the buildings lightings and even more special because of the bohemian jazz festival that was happening live.

Voltamos a escolher a ideia do Free Walk Tour e escolhemos o grupo Discover Walks Prague. De manhã fizemos a tour: The old town - trendy Prague tour.

Over the next two days we explored the "City of one hundred domes". Since we enjoyed so much the Free Walk Tour we did the Discover Walks Prague. First we did the old town - Prague tour trendy. For an hour we saw the Charles University; the Flamboyant Pařížská Street and Staromák; the Josefov - the Jewish ghost town; the Astronomical Clock and its history including the 12 Apostles; the famous Grand Café Orient; the Powder Gate and Ungelt.

In the afternoon we had another "native" who guided us in the Magical Prague - Charles Bridge and Kampa Tour. With rain in the mix, it was one of the funniest tours of our trip. The first time we walked in Charles bridge was so fun because we were running while our guide was explaining it. But this tour is indeed magical - we arrived in Kampa island and the sun appeared. So we kept exploring island, where the Mission Impossible was filmed; the sculptures of tv babies; the Kajka; we heard stories about communism and post communism; we went to the Devil River, and finally we visited the John Lennon Wall. Before dinner, we Spotted a narrow alley with a traffic light that you must respect! Unique.

The first two days were memorable and with so many details it's complicated to write down everything here. In the next post I'll write about our last moments in the Czech capital.

From Czech Republic with Love: Kutná Hora and Karlštejn

Our Lady (Chrám Nanebevzetí Pany Marie); St. Barbara's Church (Kostel Svaté Barbory); Sedlec Ossuary; Church of St. James (Kostel sv. Jakuba); Church of St. John Nepomuk (Kostel sv. Jana Nepomuckého); Jesuit College (Jezuitská kolej).

After leaving Poland we went back to Czech Republic.  After a few hours driving we saw this beautiful field full of sunflowers. Shame that the photo does not do justice to the the amazing landscape.
At the end of the day we arrived in Kutná Hora. With the profits of their Silver Mine in the medieval times, Kutná Hora was once the country's richest city. Heritage of UNESCO since 1995, the city is 60km east of Prague and is famous for its monuments: Cathedral of Our Lady (Chrám Nanebevzetí Pany Marie); St. Barbara's Church (Kostel Svaté Barbory); Sedlec Ossuary; Church of St. James (Kostel sv. Jakuba); Church of St. John Nepomuk (Kostel sv.

After visiting the Cathedral and the "alternative" Chapel of Bones, we left Kutná Hora behind and went to visit another historic monument of this country: Karlstejn Castle. 40km of Prague, this Castle is amazing. It is placed on the hill which made me remember of a Fairytale Castle. It was built by King Charles IV, between 1348 and 1368. It is worth visiting and it's open between 9am to 6pm.

After visiting the castle we made our last road trip to Prague. In the next post I´ll tell you about our last stop of the trip.

From Poland With Love: Wroclaw

After leaving Kraków, we drove almost 3 hours to get to Wroclaw. The conditions of the highways are better than the Czech Republic's and I think the reason is simple; In Poland they have tolls and the other doesn't.

Wroclaw is the fourth largest city in Poland and is situated on the River Oder. With its islands and bridges, it's considered by many as the "Polish Venice". Since we enjoyed the Free Walking Tour experience in Kraków, we decided to do it again in Wroclaw. In two hours we explored the Old Town, the Market Square - Rynek, the Gothic tower, the University's main building, the Cathedral Island and the Cathedral; among other buildings and parks of the city.

Another tip I can give is that when you go there, u can be touring with a special purpose: find all the anti-communists gnomes in the historic center. They started to being painted in the '80s by a group of students: The Orange Alternative. In order to represent as many professions and states of people, artists began to build more and more. There are even special maps to indicate you the over 200 gnomes that are in here, in the capital of Lower Silesian Voivodeship.

The next day we said "goodbye" to Poland and "hello again" to Czech Republic.  Four hours later we arrived at Kutná Hora, but before crossing the border we stopped for the second time in a Mall where we had one of the best meals of the trip.

From Poland with Love: Kraków

Simplesmente espectacular.

Kraków has to be one of the most beautiful cities I've ever visited. Being the second largest city in Poland and the former capital of it, Kraków is a great tourist destination.
On the first day, after we visited Auschwitz and having the companionship of our beloved tropical rain, we explored the city at night. Completely charming with thousands of tourists and locals, Kraków was love at first sight for me. We went to dinner at the Pod Wawelem  restaurant,  where we ate very well and drank 'only' a lt of beer. The usual. Best part is the price. For €7 you have a fantastic meal with a great environment.
After dinner you can go out, but what I recommend is a Tram that is transformed into a discotheque at night. Simply spectacular.

The next morning we explored the city center. Personally I recommend the Free Walking Tour. You just have to show up at the indicated meeting point at the right time and you'll have a guide that will explain the city and its history. The tours are free and in the end we offer a tip that we find the most appropriate for the guide's work. It is a fantastic opportunity to explore and understand a city.
In Kraków we must visit: Main Square - Rynek Glowny; the historic city center; the Virgin Mary's Church - Kościół Mariacki; the Oskar Schindler's factory, the Jagiellonian University - Collegium Maius; The Wawel Cathedral - Katedra Wawelska; the Franciscan Church - Kościół Franciszkanow, The Wawel royal Castle - Zamek Krolewski; St. Florian's Gate - Florianska-Gate; The Jewish District - Kazimierz; The Cloth Hall; and the garden surrounding the city.

In the afternoon we went to the Salt Mine - Wieliczka Salt Mine. For about three hours we were several meters deep (up to 135m) and surrounded by breathtaking beauty. At a certain point you'll only say: Wow! Believe that the most incredible chapel you will ever see is the Saint Kinga's. This Salt Mine has to be in your "must see" travel list. Trust me, it's unforgettable.

Late that afternoon we went to a place for the first time.... We were beggining to notice the many hours of walking in our legs. So, where's the place to go? After all we're women so we went to a Shopping, the Gallery-Krakowska! Yehh!

Kraków, it's was really a pleasure and hope to see you eventually!

Całuje!

From Poland with Love: Oświęcim

We left Ostrava (Czech Republic) around 9am and at the hotel there were guests drinking beer already: this is great way to start the day. Driving for almost two hours, we stopped in  Oświęcim (Poland) to visit two concentration camps: Auschwitz (I) and Auschwitz-Birkenau (II).

Without a doubt, Auschwitz is a place that must be visited eventually. We all studied them in school and we have seen many movies about World War II. Who does not remember La vita è bella (1997)? Perhaps we just remember the "Buongiorno, Principessa!" and the tank in the end, the prize for winning the "game". The truth is that it happened and these concentration camps serve to awaken us to how horrible humans can be. It is unforgettable to visit it, where we can see the inhumane conditions in which they lived and were treated by the Nazis. There is also exhibitions with belongings of the people as their bags, which they left when they came here, their glasses and shoes. Personally it is all shocking, but the children part is the most revolting one. It's estimated that almost one million and half people died in these camps.

Weeks before the trip I watched Schindler's List (1993), directed by Steven Spielberg. It takes place in these camps. While our guide was introducing the visit that we was about to start, I stared at the famous "Arbeit macht frei" and I thought: it was not a movie, it was a reality of terror. That may never be forgotten.

Hello August!

A melhor parte: a minha tese.

Welcome August; a great month just arrived full of sun and parties. The best part: my thesis. It must be done till the end of this month.
Have fun!
